OK: here is WHAT this Image Anti Ransom Forum is doing here.

In the world's dumbest business idea since "New Coke", www.Photobucket.com in July 2017 started demanding $US399pa ($A525) for you to use their service to add, or have visible your old images, here, or on other boards. They added a black Ransom icon to your images on global boards, or ebay etc. Some members have used www.IMGUR.com for years, and have had no issues with that. If you have a thread you had photobucket images in, and want to re-populate it, we will move it here - a forum you can edit for MORE than an hour - forever actually, when given Moderator permissions, and you can add in yours and other's pix via IMGUR links etc. Members have saved 100,000 images so far - VOLUNTEER to assist please!

Pages up to 20 inclusive are clear of Photobucket. The most issue until now has been Glen - he used to be posting from wherever not  A good number of his links got dead, and I had to delete the posts - guys, do note that the pages shifted back.
Survived links are replaced with imgured ones. Listening to the Rainbow made the process easier :D

I would like to thank the key people in some material way - I know! Free membership of Stampboards.

An excellent idea. If you post the images to that thread, as normal, I will slot them in to the correct places for you. Just put a little description with them so I know where each one goes.

I've been away from Stampboards for a few years, but it seems my decision to not use the recommended image hosting was a good one, and the few images I've posted here, hosted from my own website, ended up being more future proof – at least for now.

Of course, having a system in place allowing images to be hosted by Stampboards itself would be ideal so that future generations of stamp collectors can enjoy the forum with all its images in place.

I don't know why that would have ended up being a dead link, unless my hosting service just happened to be down when it was checked, which is also strange as I can see the detail images are still there. I just checked, and the image is still exactly where it was when I made the post: http://www.galleryhakon.com/stamps/Norway_fiske1984.jpg

[Mod hat on]

Perhaps because the original link was to: http://www.hakon-art.com/stamps/Norway_fiske1984.jpg which is a dead link, hence its removal. The image has now been re-instated using Imgur as the source.

I post here a note today from the Moderators backroom board from UK member CMJ who has amazingly battled for 100s of hours I feel sure, over several months, with all the old hosted images over 12 years, using his software and IT skills. As you can see he reports he has now converted pretty much EVERY image ever posted here on stampboards over 12 years - near 900,000 of them, to be now hosted on http://www.stampboards.com

That domain I own, and am very happy to be paying the extra hosting costs of 900,000 or so images, on our American servers, as it means they will now stay here forever - if photobucket or IMGUR go feral or go bust etc, it will barely matter to us now.

A sensational job by CMJ and all members owe him a large vote of thanks. :)

CMJ wrote:I knew I would eventually be writing this, but I did not expect it to be so soon :D

The task of clearing Stampboards of historical images located elsewhere (and dead links) has been completed. As of 10pm (UK time) today (about 30 mins ago) all images are hosted on stampboards.com regardless of where they originally were located.

Image

Obviously there MAY be a few missed (e.g. in the huge counting threads) but it will be only a handful.

Unfortunately, as I type this new images have probably already been added but let us relish this moment

I have nearly finished working on a revised process to continue harvesting all new images and changing the links to ensure this remains the case into the future, and I will post details once this is complete.

Chris.

CMJ was only able to do his huge part, due to the 1000s of hours of Community spirited Volunteering by these members below who offered to volunteer to assist in wrestling with the photobucket b*stardry tactic, of what they THOUGHT was masking all their images forever, unless their stupid ransom of $US500 a year was paid over, for each free account.

If photobucket go bust, as seems entirely likely this year, too bad for them, as that dopey Ransom demand that lost them most of their users. Them going bust tomorrow will now not affect this board basically.

These hard working members below saved the day, and got all the images into IMGUR, where CMJ had a good run at then converting them all to being hosted on here.

A real world example of the strong global stamp Community we have developed here, where heaps of members worked hard to KEEP stampboards as the clear Number One Bulletin Board globally for stamps.

Google ANY stamp related query, and you are directed here in first match most times, and near all with an image to match the query.

A large pat on the back to CMJ and all those below, who spent 1000s of hours to set things up into a fixed common image platform, so he could work on converting them -

Glen

A reminder again to all not to delete your photobucket account. They are very handy back-up for when IMGUR has tech issues (fairly often!) and for when posting things for sale here etc. They'll go bust at some point that much seems likely, but as long as you log in each few months your images there are safe, and free. They are deleting free accounts that have had no activity so DO log in now while you think of it! 8)

Now this image storing issue is pretty much under control I'll get onto out PBP Bulletin Board Development supremo in New York to update us to the latest, shiniest php version in a few weeks. Did not want to start on that whilst old images were still being sorted, and doing ANYTHING over the Xmas/New Year "Silly Season" is never wise, as everyone is busy and/or away, and does to want any disruptions or hassle.

"Quoting" posts that had self hosted images was not working well when Fletches1 set up his back room test site 2 months back for Mods here to experiment with.

A shiny new php board version was released in December - phpBB 3.2.5- RC1 and not sure if they have fixed that bug?

https://area51.phpbb.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?f=81&t=60806

https://www.phpbb.com/about/launch/

Anyway, when we upgrade, we'll have the fastest newest, sleekest version - and all post replies advices will work again instantly too!

(Does any member reading this, have skills in phpBB software - please drop me a line if you do!)

Thanks again to all those members for their 1000s of hours of positive volunteer help to keep this board THE best globally - by several light years.

Well I part agree with that.

Great job done by all. Some on the list rescued 5 or 10 images in one thread and some like vicaf60 etc, did 1000s of images in 100s of threads. It was real teamwork by ALL of them. And paved the way for CMJ to do his magic. 8)

The last time we unilaterally did that for a bunch of members for some reason, there was a riot. Chewed up a day of my time sorting it all out. Most Folks with ''Winner! Poster Of The Month'' (like you) or "I Was Online For Post 5 Million" or "KING Poster Of All Time" or "100 Thousand Club - Addicted Stamp Poster!" baubles etc, etc, complained to me they did NOT want those replaced etc, as they liked them greatly. The software allows for only ONE icon per member. So lesson learned!

HOWEVER, I have decided earlier today we will come up with a special 4 Diamond bauble level for CMJ, to recognise that he has quietly and single handedly rescued about 900,000 images so far - indeed, at the rate new ones are being made and quietly and quickly converted, he will have saved forever, a MILLION images here very shortly.

An amazing result, that will definitely benefit all members, now, and in the future. 8)

I don't know the mechanics: I envisaged a single additional icon added to existing icons, but realise that it may not be as easy as that :D

How CMJ managed to do as many as he did in that time, I have no idea. He musty have put his life on hold to do it; whilst I would have happily done mine, like you I have a lot of other things to do - including holidays.

Your suggestion is most sensible.

Ian, with the software we have here, there is one choice a member.

Admin panel lets us custom create a lot of baubles and special titles etc to use where needed, or that cut in automatically and changes for example when a poster moves from 999 to 1000, or 9999 to 10000 posts etc, or optional types on a large drop down menu, but it is just ONE option per member possible.

Puffin - we tried days of designs when we set up the baubles. They are 25 x 25 pixels a bauble - that tiny, most details on them gets lost sadly. Things that looked great up large, lost it totally down small!

Well, with the help of resident phpBB Tech Whizz Fletches1 in the Mod Group, we have set up CMJ with a small but permanent memento of all his hard work saving these images -

Image

http://stampboards.com/memberlist.php?mode=viewprofile&u=6814

Near 900,000 images saved to our own website already, and he is daily converting new ones posted up via 3rd party sites, so saving the millionth is only a matter of not very much more time.

Even when we update to the new phpBB platform soon, there will be masses of members who will not understand how to load their images direct to the board, or will read the tutorial - so his work is not finished yet, by a long way!

Anyway, that is a million stamp related images that will now be saved forever on our own server - an astounding achievement - and again my thanks, and the thanks from all members I feel sure, for now making this the number one stamp image archive on this planet.

My tech skills are near zero (I have never sent a text message, used a mobile phone, and have never used twitter, or Facebook, or an app - I can't even change a single thing on my own huge stamp dealer website!) and without the generous volunteer assistance from those members who do know 10,000 times more than me in that area, this board could simply NOT exist.

I have no tech skills, but I do have ''long game'' Big Picture vision generally, and am quite sure this is a major achievement by having all images hosted here now. Well done to all for assisting to that end. 8)

It is a totally FREE board to all - no fees to anyone, no annoying pop up ads and intrusions, or cookies and sneaky data tracking, and all the other similar tricks used by near all other large sites on earth these days.

We have built a truly unique and sharing COMMUNITY of ~20,000 members in the stamp world here.

An excellent job done all round by all & a fitting tribute to CMJ whose tireless efforts should not be overlooked.

Near 900,000 images saved to our own website already, and he is daily converting new ones posted up via 3rd party sites, so saving the millionth is only a matter of not very much more time.

I, too, want to add my thanks to all who participated in saving all those images for posterity.

It is a thankless task, though, the thanks here, might indicate otherwise.

Anyway, thank you to those who work quietly behind the scenes to give us the successful forum we have here.

... and another set of thanks from me.

As Glen so often says, ours is a visual hobby and virtually every thread on this forum is complimented by the use of great images.

Adam

It's a while since I have done this. If I haven't moved it correctly, please let me know.
