OK: here is WHAT this Image Anti Ransom Forum is doing here.

In the world's dumbest business idea since "New Coke", www.Photobucket.com in July 2017 started demanding $US399pa ($A525) for you to use their service to add, or have visible your old images, here, or on other boards. They added a black Ransom icon to your images on global boards, or ebay etc. Some members have used www.IMGUR.com for years, and have had no issues with that. If you have a thread you had photobucket images in, and want to re-populate it, we will move it here - a forum you can edit for MORE than an hour - forever actually, when given Moderator permissions, and you can add in yours and other's pix via IMGUR links etc. Members have saved 100,000 images so far - VOLUNTEER to assist please!

OK: here is WHAT this Image Anti Ransom Forum is doing here.

Post by Global Administrator »

For the cause of this mess please see here for full rundown - and add comments there -

http://www.stampboards.com/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=77822

photobucket will not HAVE a viable business next month I suspect, due to this global Gangster Blackmail stupidity. Almost no paying customers left I'd guess, and all the ad vendors (where the real income is) will mostly pull out too - no legit business wants to be associated with Blackmail and cyber kidnapping - what a stunning success model! We are seeing that already - the ads there now are often low grade porn stuff, and ads that no-one else will take.

In the MEANTIME - not a perfect solution, but it WILL assist many, I have set up this Forum that will allow existing threads to be moved there, and any images in there NOT already hosted on http://www.IMGUR.com to swapped over to there.

As all members know, the default is nothing over an hour can be edited on the boards generally. I'll add over-ride permission to THAT Forum one by one when asked, to those who wish to swap over their favourite cars, favourite cat stamps, favourite KGV heads stamps there etc, for new IMGUR based versions.

For some members who have 100s or 1000s of images in 1 thread, well, probably a Bridge too Far. HOWEVER, for those determined, it will work fine. All your images RIGHT NOW are visible in your photobucket account, so it is doable.

As you can see you can do it for YOUR images and the OTHER images in the thread from other members.

Right click them, give them a brief number, and save them to your device, and reload them anew in IMGUR, and then add to the thread here. Job done.

More detail on HOW to do it here - http://www.stampboards.com/viewtopic.php?f=65&t=77850&start=100

For later July or so I'd booked in only last month for us to migrate the entire board to the brand new phpBB Bulletin Board platform - this was arranged before photobucket went feral. I've rolled that back a few weeks so we can restore 100s of major threads with http://www.imgur.com images replacing photobucket ones.

In the past, the phpBB platform version we use did NOT allow image hosting. Fletches1 and I have been hassling them for years to add that as a standard platform feature, and it seems they have finally relented. The guy swapping us over to the all new bells and whistles platform is the HEAD of phpBB globally in New York, who has worked with us before.

I personally pay a small fortune already for pretty much unlimited bandwidth in Tulsa to host the board, and our data is load balance shared over 4 large USA server hosts, so it is 105% secure and stable. Indeed our stampboards data is more secure than many Government Departments, both in the USA and elsewhere.

Going forward it will be (hopefully!) possible to add new images securely to our database in the first instance, and not need to be a servant to the whims or either photobucket or IMGUR etc going forward.

Once all or most are in IMGUR we think we can then convert those on the back end here, to be all hosted FOREVER to this website. So we need an ARMY of folks to donate some time to rescue the Photobucket images, thread by thread for the important ones, and swap them to IMGUR in the first instance.

RIGHT NOW ... add a post HERE as to WHAT Forum you want to edit, and Mods will take a look at them on a case by case basis.

OR volunteer a few hours of your time to help others work on large thread with 100s of images to save. "TEAMWORK" and real Community Spirit.

Around 100,000 of images have been swapped over already in recent weeks by Community minded Volunteer Members as you can see reading this thread. TEAMWORK of the highest order.

We even got a mention on BBC News today of our Ransom fightback, and a link on their website to this thread!

If you need some help on how to save images see instructions at -

And folks, Mods are busy people.

Type something like "my old thread on Dogs" and no-one is likely to bother reading your mind. I certainly will not try.

What we NEED is the thread title and the exact link to it i.e. -

"Indian State Jhalawar Stamps and Covers"

In Forum - Scans of really NICE looking stamps & covers etc. Add yours!

http://www.stampboards.com/viewtopic.php?f=17&t=5854

And WHAT Forum it is now in, as we need to move it back there when done, and of course a dozen different Forums can be involved, and we have no idea when in here.

NEVER use stampboards.NET links here, as mods need the to log in to access them - always use stampboards.COM links or your requests will likely be ignored.

Glen

[centre]Image[/centre]

Many volunteers are not wildly tech savvy - we fully understand that. :)

READ the first few pages of this Forum first to get a feel for what is going on.

READ this post and the post above it to get the "Cliff Notes" version.

[centre]Image[/centre]

READ these posts on this link below, on a step by step tutorial as to how to save a photobucket "Ransom Wheel" black image, to be an IMGUR photo that can be viewed readily.

http://stampboards.com/viewtopic.php?f=65&t=77850&start=101

[centre]Image[/centre]

Handy note for all those doing edits - when you see this "Kitten" below it is NOT necessarilya DEAD IMAGE - "PHOTO NOT FOUND" wording on it does not mean it is dead, like the Black Imgur one.

[centre]Image

Image[/centre]

Previuosly NOTHING anyone could do could restore this "Kitten" image, but something has changed somewhere & we can now restore many or most.

Editors if you find one you cannot restore have one of the Mods check. If it is one that cannot be restored, as this "Kitten" symbol looks ugly, delete the entire post if that does not mess the flow of page, OR better, delete that image link, and have a little macro on file to drop into that space that says -

(Image was deleted by inactive member, or by photobucket etc.)

[centre]Image[/centre]

HOWEVER - the black Ransom Black Wheel of Death images **ARE** Still there in 99% of cases. DO NOT DELETE THESE as some Repairers are annoyingly doing for some strange reason. You simply need to take the PB code, and follow instructions on link above on HOW to grab and save that image.

If you are having issues ask for help - do NOT lazily or carelessly delete them, as then the image will NEVER be visible in future of course.

I found a few 'Dial Of Death' images lately, that would not rescue no matter WHAT I did.

In such cases, if the Volunteer is experienced, and knows it is a totally lost cause, delete the link and add this text in - (copy this html code and keep in a Macro perhaps!)

[centre]Moderator note - Original link here was lost, corrupted, or deleted by member. [/centre]

[centre]Image[/centre]

Folks, EVERY member, and certainly EVERY volunteer here, should immediately click on these links and install these instant add-ons -

https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/photobucket-hotlink-fix/kegnjbncdcliihbemealioapbifiaedg

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/photobucket-fix

These cunning codes then let you "see" every blocked Photobucket image, making the saving of them 10 times faster!

Can't see if any such clever hacks for IE/Edge or Safari exist if so - add them here please.

[centre]Image[/centre]

So if we can SEE the images, they are a CINCH to capture.

Sometimes try the photobucket rescue does not ork but you CAN see the pix. SIMPLE fix - Every computer for years has had a "Snipping Tool" option where you can simply take a "snapshot" copy of any image you can SEE. Or of course, every computer has the "prt sc" or 'print screen' button, where you can take an exact copy of what you see. 8)

This took me 20 seconds to capture and save here -

[centre]Image[/centre]

[centre]Image[/centre]

And for thread links you post here, NOTHING past the topic number is ever needed here - which is always "t=76730" - all the rest below in green is clearly totally extraneous, when some members finally figure out how to add the URL tags.

viewtopic.php?f=23&t=76730&p=4821689&hilit=How+to+start+your+own+country%2C+their+Cinderella+stamps#p4821689

All we EVER need anywhere on the board is this style link, where member clicks it, and then clicks the "URL" button in reply box so it does not truncate like the above.

http://www.stampboards.com/viewtopic.php?f=23&t=76730

i.e. -

NOTHING past "t=123456" at end or ANY link, EVER needs be posted here. Delete all the other Alphabet Soup OFF. 8) 8)

[centre]Image[/centre]

WHY do some links show in 'short' form?

Because some members do not do what we ALWAYS urge folks to do with EVERY link they EVER post from anywhere about anything - left click the link with your mouse, THEN hit the URL button when posting -

[centre]Image[/centre]

Takes HALF a second on each post to do here, and then the link displays in full, not HALF the link.

UNLESS that is done, when someone cuts and pastes from a thread they then get this which does not work as you can see -

'The Big Crack' on 1d 1913 Roo - can anyone help?

viewtopic.php?f=10&t=3838

[centre]Image[/centre]

Folks, when you volunteer to repair a thread, you need to swap over EVERY image in that thread into your IMGUR account. NOT just your 'own' images. Exceptions being of course, those images already in IMGUR OR links that have already been swapped over to stampboards.com by others i.e. that look like this

http://www.stampboards.com/images/rsah6426/DSC00691.jpg

i.e. do not TOUCH any such image as it is already fully hosted here!

I use Firefox as my main browser, and on that, just right mouse clicking on ANY image tells you which hosting program it is already in, so very quick and fast to see. ALL browsers have a quick way to do that - learn yours. And when done editing it all, press the "f5" key on top row (or "ctrl" and "f5" keys together) to 'Refresh your cache' so you can see if it is really all done. :)

[centre]Image[/centre]

"It was not possible to determine the dimensions of the image."

No idea why they did it, but IMGUR in September recently seem to have coded all their links as follows -

https://i.imgur.com/bkP7o0V.jpg?1

i.e. with the SECURE SITE "https" prefix.

Our board software for some reason is not accepting these https images.

[centre]Dead Simple fix, simply delete the last "s" on new images being posted before hitting SUBMIT - i.e. [/centre]

http://i.imgur.com/bkP7o0V.jpg?1

And VOILA - images post fine.

OLDER images already loaded with "https" prefixes are showing fine - we just need to do this short term fix for NEW images being loaded anywhere, until I get techies to figger out why "https" prefixes are causing an issue.

Going forward, whether they are loaded here within threads as http or https is irrelevant - both will show fine forever I imagine.

[centre]Image[/centre]

We ask ALL Volunteers working on repairing threads, to add a note at end of thread as shown below, WHEN all completed that it has been updated. Keeps all here in the loop, AND also "bumps" the thread to a pile of new viewers, as a bonus!

All Photobucket “Ransom” images above have been replaced, and saved forever.

As you were clearly told yesterday and as most folks fully realise, if you right click on any image you can see its source. Please do NOT clog up this useful thread with vague and random thought bubbles, derailing it.

The fact many PB images ARE still visible, is WHY this thread is here. DURRHHH. So they can be swapped over now to IMGUR etc.

Please bear with me, I am still very shell shocked by this, so I apologize in advance if you feel this is a stupid question.

If my pictures are already on my device do I still need to download them from photobucket :?:

I take it that my JFK fdc thread is beyond help due to it's size :?:

No, if you already have them saved (and I would always recommend that people keep copies of any photos etc they upload anywhere) you shouldn't need to download them, all that would mean is that you have two copies locally.

Brad ... we all have the images on our devices I assume, so no need to go near photobucket really. I stress if PB gets a wake up call and charge $40pa and not $400 they'll get 1000 times the takeup, so it might well occur - none of us know.

For instance if I move your JFK thread here, and you take hours loading all images into IMGUR, and you replace them 1 by 1, PB might relent next week and all wasted time. None of us know.

Hopefully all of this is totally self-evident to all, so we can focus our energies moving threads here, like pmc's who was clearly happy to swap over the images he had in there.

The thread for chit chat, and questions, and teeth gnashing etc is here -

http://stampboards.com/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=77822

THIS thread is for folks who understand what is going on, want to restore their images, and needs to be simple so Mods can readily follow real requests to move threads in and out of here.

Hi Glen, I'm not the most tech savvy person around, but I've managed to download all of my Photobucket pics into one file in Picasa, easily accessible to me now..

So if I give you a Thread I have X amount of pics in, then you make it so I can "edit" my pics, by deleting the Photobucket pic, then replacing it with the same pic through Imgur, of which I'll have to add to my Library in there..

Have I got this right ?

I spent a bit of time this evening restoring lost images for the last few pages of

Show your Australia Pre-Decimal stamps on Commercial Covers
http://www.stampboards.com/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=15712&start=1000

A bit fiddly but satisfying to see all the images on the last pages back to normal.

Just grabbed the Photobucket URL for each missing image, saved it on my computer then uploaded into IMGUR and dropped it back into the post and went to the next one.

Even if you only see the Ransom Clock, the image IS still there, and you can save it for ANY member.

If you have a favourite thread, you might like to volunteer to restore it too.

Don't let the Photobucket cyber bullies wreck our board.

Hi Glen
I have fixed the thread "Australia postally used block" - hope all comes out ok!
I did download all the photos from PB to Imgur so all images are fine - but it will take me a while to fix other threads esp the CTO thread - maybe let's see if there is any chance PB will change their mind.

I was able to find one image that had been replaced by the Photobucket notice by right clicking on the notice and copying the URL and then going to Archive.org and searching for the URL. This took me to the original image. I know it isn't practical to replace the pb url's with the archive.org url's but this may be of help to people who don't still have copies of things they have posted to pb. Of course not everything has been archived at archive.org but it is amazing how much deleted (or otherwise inaccessible) web content can be found there.

Hope this helps and good luck to victims of Photobucket.

I've grabbed all the images I can although about 4 are not showing on the links.

I have downloaded all of my images from Photobucket.

I guess the only useful stuff I have put on SB is my tutorials, so I could test the change with:

Tutorial: Identifying GB pre-decimal Postage Dues
viewtopic.php?t=10206
Discuss stamps - and *anything* at ALL happening with stamps

Thanks,
Alastair

Edited to provide requested info. Bad copy/paste on my part

Glen

Folks, I have no idea why a concise and simple request like this above is apparently impossible to understand for some?

PLEASE follow this dead simple formula above to save me wasting 10 minutes each request reading minds, and second guessing.

We need these THREE simple things in each post thanks, and then we can get you set up with the relevant "permissions".

The Italian Military Cards thread has had its heart transplant. It turned out to be a lot simpler than I expected. I have 2500 Photobucket images but once I started editing, I didn't have to search through them all. I only had to change a small part of each address.

Off to bed now! I'll look at another thread tomorrow.
Where do the years go? I went from philandering to philately and didn't even notice.

The following is not my thread but I use it all the time for reference and would hate to see it disappear.

The Russians in Germany Stamps 1945-49 (Soviet Zone)
http://stampboards.com/viewtopic.php?f=17&t=16899

I have not seen any post by Gavin-h who was the threads main originator, concerning this Photobucket issue.

So far, all of the images are showing, but they all do appear to be on Photobucket.

I am backing the images up on my hard drive. Should they permanently disappear, they will be safe and can be reloaded. Should the Photobucket problem not be solved, Gavin-h or myself can change everything over to Imgur, or some other safer image hosting site. I hope no one minds my intervention here.
All the best,

Since some of my images are on this thread had a quick look through.
The following pages have Ransomware images (with Poster name):
P.7: ASMODEOUS
P.10:Do
P.11:LUNDY (Including Avatar!), OLDDUFFER1
P.12:Do
P.13:OLDDUFFER1
P.14:OLDDUFFER1,VFNDJS
P.15:OLDDUFFER1
P.16:OLDDUFFER1,CARMEL

Europhil's images are also missing but this is a different issue as probably loaded direct from his from his web site which is currently down. (We are attempting to re-constitute it).

As far as restoring to this thread, and others, I wonder if it makes a difference if the images were saved as "Public" or "Private" in Photorobber? (Obviously referring to other Member's images). I am happy to restore my own images in due course if this all proves to be permanent.

There is an option in your photobucket account to select "Download Album".

This then takes a few minutes to save all of your images back , from whatever folder you select in Photobucket (and I suggest the root folder "Your Bucket"), to one easy to manage ZIP file - which you can then "save as" to a folder on your own hard drive.

"Voila" all of your Photobucket images are saved.

From there you can easily select out any image you need from the ZIP file and upload to another server (IMGUR or similar) and repoint in your thread.

Hope this helps

Dave

Peter .. you have me perplexed here.

That thread has SEVEN posts.

Nothing posted on it for over 10 years.

I really think if members are to generously volunteer on swapping over images, we focus HEAVILY on the most used topics, and most popular ones.

That 10 year old thread could be deleted and on-one would notice or really care. Agree?

I've moved the scans (of my images) to imgur for the following two wikis of mine:

1. "1/- roo Die 2 1st & 2nd wmks - flaws" viewtopic.php?f=33&t=27086&p=1990629#p1990629

2. "NSW TPOs" by Peck. viewtopic.php?f=33&t=63779#p4246407

I did not copy fellow Stampboarders' responses/reply posts.

A cursory test of 1. for one page of its wiki proved successful. Will update the remainder of the these two wikis after several others are backed up.
Looking for NSW cut-down relief date stamps, as seen in my avatar, to add to my collection.

So, I have move most my images to Imgur (can't seem to access PB at the present moment, but everything still saved to hard drive). I would like to edit my one active topic;

I have free time this coming week and will want to correct this topic please! The other few topics I have are not very active, but can fix at a later date if needed.
