F1 Australian Grand Prix 2020: Guess winner, podium: PRIZES!

Post by joelk »

Welcome to the 2020 Fomula 1 season! :D :D

It promises to be chaotic, with the COVID-19 virus scare threatening some of the early races, Ferrari's side regulation deals, and no doubt countless more surprises...

Here on Stampboards, we refresh our contest with a new Prize 3, to be won on November 29, 2020, at the last Grand Prix of the Season in Abu Dhabi, a surprise Prize 1 for the Australian Grand Prix, and of course a new penny black to be won in South Africa on March 29th if the schedule proceeds as intended.

I will also be refreshing the list of alternative Prizes 2 over the course of the next few races.

But in the meantime, it seems as though the Australian Grand Prix will be going ahead next week in Melbourne, on March 15th to be precise.

The official start time of the Australian Grand Prix will be Sunday, March 15th, at 4.10 PM local time, which is 5.10 AM in London on March 15th and (of course) 4.10 PM in Sydney. No guesses will be accepted after that time.

So let's start the play for the season! The rules have not changed. Here they are:

You need to be a Stampboards member - joining up is free -

Register here!

To qualify for winning a prize here, all you need to do after you join up is to make sure you contribute at least 5 (on topic) posts to philatelic threads, not including requests to receive freebies, before the start of the GP.

I will check your posts in the event you have a winning guess in order to verify this qualification.

If you did not quality for any reason, the prize will go to the next eligible post.

To participate, you must name five different drivers, in the order you believe they will be officially classified, from the winner, to the fifth finisher.

One guess per Stampboarder, and it cannot be changed once it has been made. Editing in the same post will also no longer be permitted.

You will get one point per driver who finishes in the same position as your guess, so a maximum of 5 points at each race.

- Prize 1: the winner is the person who gets the most points at that race. If there is a tie, the earlier guess wins.

- Prize 2: the winner is the person who gets the most points at the end of a three race sprint. In case of a tie, the earlier guess on the third race of the sprint wins.

The winner of Prize 2 then has a choice: he or she can go for the default Prize 2, which will always be a four margin penny black, or he or she can choose to accumulate more points to ‘purchase’ an alternative Prize 2. Once you have chosen to accumulate, there is no going back until you have 'bought' an alternative Prize 2. The accumulation can only go until the end of Season 2020, as this format will continue for the next two seasons.

The list of Prize 2's along with how many points you need to purchase them, is shown below.

Once you have won a 3 race sprint, if you do not elect to take the Penny Black on offer, you will continue to accumulate points for Prize 2 as long as you wish (but not past the end of Season 2019) in order to ‘purchase’ an alternative Prize 2.

You can do so at any time once you have accumulated enough points to ‘purchase’ the Prize 2 of your choosing.

Once you have chosen a Prize 2, whether the Penny Black or an alternative Prize, your Prize 2 points count will be reset to 0.

If you do not choose the penny black, it will be on offer for the next three race sprint.

This is designed so that anyone who wins a three race sprint will at some point be able to claim a Prize 2, whether a four margin penny black or an alternative Prize.

Everyone else will have their Prize 2 points reset to 0 to restart the three race sprint, except the Prize 2 points 'accumulators'.

There can be several Prize 2 points 'accumulators' at the same time, as long as they have not 'purchased' their Prize 2.

- Prize 3: the points are counted and accumulated in the same way: 1 point per correctly placed pilot at each race, but everyone gets to keep their Prize 3 points until the season's last race, where the highest point accumulator wins.

Prize 3 will be attributed on December 1, on the occasion of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix 2019.

If there is a tie, the contest continues only among the Stampboarders with the highest score, until the tie is broken.

Anti-shadowing rule for Prize 3:

- This rule applies to the top three Prize 3 points accumulators at any race: the #1 accumulator will have to post their guess at least three hours before the official start of the race, the #2 accumulator two hours before the official start, and the #3 accumulator one hour. Everyone else has to put in their guess before the official start time of the Grand Prix.

- There will be zero tolerance for any time 'overshoot', even if it is one second, and any editing for all contestants, and no excuses accepted: my computer slowed down, Stampboards loaded too slowly, my cat stepped on my keyboard…so please note this carefully as I want to avoid any unpleasantness or ambiguities.

And here are the Prizes:

- Prize 1 for the Australian Grand Prix, comes from...Australia. It consists of three lovely Kookaburra stamps, issued respectively in 1913 (MH), 1928 (MNH) and 1937 (MNH).

- And here is the list of Prize 2's:

First, the Penny Black that will be attributed on March 29th, on the occasion of the South African Grand Prix, with the check letters RF:

The first Alternative Prize 2, costing 10 Prize 2 points, is the iconic 'Pont du Gard', here in MH condition, issued by France in 1930, and engraved by Henri Cheffer:

The second Alternative Prize 2, costing 12 Prize 2 points, consists of two iconic Sinking Fund Stamps issued by France in 1928 and 1931 and engraved by Abel Mignon, both offered here in MH condition:

The third alternative Prize 2, costing 14 points, is a GB classic, the KEVII £1 green:

The fourth alternative Prize 2, costing 16 Prize 2 points, is the Cardinal Mercier set of Belgium, issued in 1932, also MH:

The fifth Alternative Prize 2, costing 18 Prize 2 points, is the Orval set of 1929, reissued in 1929 with a crown overprint, to commemorate the laying of the first stone towards the restoration of the Orval Abbey (offered MH here):

The sixth Alternative Prize 2, costing 18 Prize 2 points, is pretty exceptional: it consists of all the Buzin bird stamps, ie all formats, face values and of course all birds, issued over the past 30 years. There are 113 stamps and one Souvenir Sheet, all MNH of course:

The seventh Alternative Prize 2, costing 22 Prize 2 points, consists of the first 16 stamps of Belgium, including the three variants of the imperforate 'epaulettes' (framed double L watermak, L watermark and unwatermarked). All the imperforate stamps are four margin examples:

And Prize 3 for the 2020 season is an echo of the 2018 season, which offered a virtually complete run of the small format surface printed stamps. It's time therefore to offer the larger format, high values issued in the latter part of the Victorian reign and under Edward VII. All these stamps are sound (no creases, tears, bent perfs, etc...):

And now it's all up to you! :D

Cheers,

Joel.

Great to see Joel's superb F1 comp back and let us pray the first races take place. :!:

Melbourne looks PROBABLE .. but not certain - and Vietnam and China look doomed - for early season anyway -

https://www.stampboards.com/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=89763

Italy today strictly quarantined about a third of the population, (16 million people) as virus cases have exploded there, and Italy fields 2 x large staff F1 teams.

Fingers crossed for good news in the next days for Melbourne.

Maybe that is why Lewis Hamilton is madly trying to stop the race today?!

As fears grow that the coronavirus is already spreading in the Formula One paddock at the Australian Grand Prix, the world champion, Lewis Hamilton, has admitted he is “shocked” the race is going ahead.

Up to eight team members have now been tested for the coronavirus and placed into self-isolation as further doubt is cast over the running of the race on Sunday. Hamilton delivered a withering assessment of why he believed the meeting was taking place, commenting that “cash is king”.

Hamilton, the six-time world champion, goes into the season opener at Albert Park as strong favourite to take a record-equalling seventh title. However he was uncompromising in his criticism that F1 was putting its personnel and fans at risk in holding a meeting that is set to attract at least 100,000 people on race day just as the WHO has declared a pandemic.

“I am really very, very surprised that we are here,” he said. “I think it’s really shocking that we are all sitting in this room. There are so many fans here today and it seems like the rest of the world is reacting, probably a little bit late, but we have already seen this morning that [US president Donald] Trump has shut down the borders with Europe to the States and you are seeing the NBA being suspended, yet Formula One continues to go on.

“It’s a concern I think for the people here – it’s quite a big circus that’s come here and it’s definitely concerning for me.”

Despite doubts being expressed about whether holding the race was suitable given the global spread of the infection, promoters, the FIA and F1 have insisted there is no reason as yet to cancel the meeting. Race fees are one of the three biggest revenue streams for F1.

When asked why he thought it was going ahead Hamilton pointedly noted: “Cash is king. I can’t add much more to it. I don’t feel like I should shy away from my opinion.”

What a mess - it is now Friday am here in Australia, and practice sessions are due to start later today. In less than 12 hours for P1.

HOPEFULLY no other team members test positive. The Victorian Government has a tough call to make today. I personally think it is way too late to cancel this. The teams are all here, have all been medical checked, and practice sessions are about to take place.

The HAAS team member tests are not released and that might be a defining issue, if any positives are in there.

Fingers crossed they proceed, with the usual ''health warnings about gatherings in public places'' etc. A million Melbounians travel to the CBD to work each day, so realistically, shutting the race to the public, like Bahrain is doing next GP, makes no sense.

Wall Street futures are down another 1231 points as I type, Royal Caribbean and Norwegian Cruise lines are both down 25% today alone, major airlines down double digits in USA and Europe again, so lets pray for some normality to set in at some point.

McLaren withdraws from Australian F1 Grand Prix after positive coronavirus test

The Australian F1 Grand Prix is in greater doubt after one of the teams was hit by a positive coronavirus test and withdrew from the event.

The opening race of the F1 season is in doubt after McLaren team member tested positive for coronavirus, with the team withdrawing from the event.

In a statement released on Thursday night, McLaren confirmed the team would not race at the Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne.

The team were the best of the rest in the 2019 season, finishing fourth in the constructors championship behind Mercedes, Ferrari and Red Bull.

But after one of the team was tested for the coronavirus, the team announced they would be withdrawing from the season-opening event.

“McLaren Racing has confirmed this evening in Melbourne that it has withdrawn from the 2020 Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix, following the positive test of a team member for the coronavirus. The team member was tested and self-isolated as soon as they started to show symptoms and will now be treated by local healthcare authorities.

Lando Norris and Carlos Sainz won’t be racing in Melbourne.

“The team has prepared for this eventuality and has ongoing support in place for its employee who will now enter a period of quarantine. The team is cooperating with the relevant local authorities to assist their investigations and analysis.

“Zak Brown, CEO of McLaren Racing, and Andreas Seidl, Team Principal of McLaren F1, informed Formula 1 and the FIA of the decision this evening. The decision has been taken based on a duty of care not only to McLaren F1 employees and partners, but also to the team’s competitors, Formula 1 fans and wider F1 stakeholders.”

The McLaren team member and four Haas team members were placed in self-isolation after being tested.

Results of the tests for the Haas staff have yet to be revealed.

Haas team principal Guenther Steiner said they had not yet discussed what to do if any of their employees tested positive.

“We’ll cross that bridge when we get to it,” he said.

AUSTRALIAN GRAND PRIX UNDER THREAT

It threatens the Australian GP as F1 managing director Ross Brawn previously stated that a World Championship round would not take place if all teams weren’t present, but appeared to be suggesting if they were prevented from travelling to an event.

“If a team is prevented from entering a country we can’t have a race,” Brawn said.

“Not a Formula 1 world championship race, anyway, because that would be unfair. Obviously if a team makes its own choice not to go to a race, that’s their decision.

“But where a team is prevented from going to a race because of a decision of the country then it’s difficult to have a fair competition.”

It may not even be FIA’s choice however with Victoria’s chief health officer Brett Sutton reported saying he would step in to stop the race if necessary.

“If (the tests) turn up positive, we need to consider what it means for their close contacts and if they have a number of close contacts across a number of crews, then those individuals need to be quarantined,” Sutton told Melbourne radio station 3AW.

“If that effectively shuts down the race, then so be it. We’ll make that call.”

It is 3.15 am here local. Nothing whatever on Google confirming anything official. Indeed this BBC reported rumour is not indexed there.

Reading the above reports, it seemed to me the F1 Circus Brass wanted the race to occur, and only the Victoria Government would be in a position to pull the plug, it seemed, and here Civil servants do not work at 3am!

Fingers crossed it is simply another rumour. Official Practice was due to commence in under 9 hours.

Grand Prix in Melbourne to be called off

Formula One's season-opening Australian Grand Prix is set to be called off due to the coronavirus outbreak, multiple reports said on Friday.

McLaren already announced on Thursday they were pulling out after one of their employees tested positive.

The BBC and Sky television both reported the race was off.

The governing FIA and Liberty Media-owned Formula One had yet to make an official comment.

Motorsport.com quoted sources saying a majority of the teams were unhappy to continue and the governing FIA would accept the decision.

There will be no spectators at the Australian Formula 1 Grand Prix in Melbourne this weekend due to the coronavirus, Victoria's Premier Daniel Andrews says.

He said race authorities were expected to make an official announcement this morning about whether the race would be cancelled.

On his way into the Council of Australian Governments (COAG) meeting in Sydney, Mr Andrews said the state's chief health officer, Brett Sutton, had provided updated advice to event organisers this morning.

"He advised they have a choice to make this morning, running no event or running an event with no spectators," he said.

"But on public health grounds there will be no spectators at the grand prix this weekend."

https://www.fia.com/news/fia-formula-1- ... -statement

Following the confirmation that a member of the McLaren Racing Team has tested positive for COVID-19 and the team’s decision to withdraw from the Australian Grand Prix, the FIA and Formula 1 convened a meeting of the other nine team principals on Thursday evening. Those discussions concluded with a majority view of the teams that the race should not go ahead. The FIA and Formula 1, with the full support of the Australian Grand Prix Corporation (AGPC) have therefore taken the decision that all Formula 1 activity for the Australian Grand Prix is cancelled.

We appreciate this is very disappointing news for the thousands of fans due to attend the race and all ticket holders will receive a full refund and a further announcement will be communicated in due course.

All parties took into consideration the huge efforts of the AGPC, Motorsport Australia, staff and volunteers to stage the opening round of the 2020 FIA Formula One World Championship in Melbourne, however concluded that the safety of all members of the Formula 1 family and the wider community, as well as the fairness of the competition take priority.

Photo from couple of hours back - fans lining up to enter the track which was to open to fans at 8.45am.

I just read that Disney announced they were closing Disneyland and Disney World. The world has gone mad. Dow Jones down 2350 points, or 10% just in one day.

According to the official Formula 1 website https://www.formula1.com/en/latest.html, the Bahrain GP has also been postponed.

The season is currently planned to start in May (in Europe).

Thanks very much for your effort with this Joel. Looks like it might be a more
tryng season. I was in Melbourne for the GP. Didn't attend Thursday as per the
last few years as there's no F1 and the other races are mainly qualifying.

Friday morning started seeing all sorts of conflicting stories about it being on
or not. Decided not to go down to the entrance gates with the others, finally
late morning it was fairly certain it was off so went off and did a tour at the
Eureka Tower (Melbourne's highest building?)

No promising news was forthcoming, so went to Melbourne Zoo on Saturday
(great, I highly recommend) and a walk along the Bay Trail from Sandringham to
Mordialloc on Sunday!

I have seen mention this GP could be re-run later this year but let's see, the logistics
would be incredible.

Andrew

Thank you very much Andrew!

Great to see you are a good sport and made the best of the situation. Well done. :!: :D

I will of course keep an eye open for the next GP and restart the contest then... :D

Cheers,
Joel.

Hi Joel,

Official news from F1 website:

The Dutch and Spanish Grands Prix have been postponed and the Monaco Grand Prix cancelled due to the global spread of the coronavirus. The news follows the cancellation of the season-opening Australian Grand Prix last week, and the postponement of the Chinese, Bahrain and Vietnam Grands Prix.

The Dutch Grand Prix, due to return to the calendar for the first time since 1985, was set to be held at Zandvoort on May 1-3, with the Spanish race following a week later, and the Monaco Grand Prix on May 21-24.

But with the ongoing coronavirus situation all three races have now been put on hold. A statement said: “Formula 1, the FIA and the three promoters have taken these decisions in order to ensure the health and safety of the travelling staff, championship participants and fans, which remains our primary concern.”

All parties said they would study the viability of finding alternative dates for the Dutch and Spanish races later in the year, and the statement added that Formula 1 and the FIA expect to be able to begin the 2020 season “as soon as it’s safe to do so after May” but will continue to monitor the situation.

Let's see ...

Cheers,
Marco

I know this is the test board

Current plan is to have two races in Austria, then two in the UK and carry on from there.
