Want to add a photo/image? Practice posting a picture HERE!

Post by Global Administrator »

April 23, 2020 update. http://www.IMGUR.com have a tech issue - whatever you try to load here, gets a "dimensions cannot be recognised" in red error message.

Do not waste your time trying - very annoying, they once were great and reliable - like photobucket once was.

We are working with them to try and sort it, but in the MEANTIME-

We suggest you use the free http://www.imgbox.com or the even better http://www.imageshack.com - simple to use - see tutorial below. I use them all the time.

[centre]***********************************[/centre]

One of the most frequently asked questions on stampboards is - "how can I add images to my post?"

[centre]ALL new threads started here must have an image in the first post. NO exceptions. [/centre]

All images posted here hosted in the hosting sites below get progressively transferred to be hosted forever on the stampboards.com servers, at our expense, but that takes weeks to do.

Since the crazy $500 a year photobucket Ransom demand of latter 2017, ruining 100,000s of older images here, we no longer want to see ANY images to be posted here using photobucket. In 2019 they started doing idiotic things like adding massive ad ''watermarks'' to YOUR photos, and/or blurring images for non paid accounts. Do NOT ever use photobucket - once our preferred hoster.

Use only use the free http://www.imgbox.com or the even better http://www.imageshack.com IMGBOX has pop up to racy ads appear now and again, so some prefer not to use it. (so always check the FAMILY CONTENT box as shown!) But do NOT close or delete your photobucket or IMGUR account, as an army of volunteers here have quietly moved 100,000s of them to our own server. Near one MILLION of them actually. 8)

http://www.imgbox.com is totally free, and simple to use - here are the basics -

[centre]Image[/centre]

[centre]Image

Image
Choose the ''800 x 800 RESIZED'' from the drop down choices. If you choose ''SQUARE'', any oblong stamp will post here SQUARE, or will show cropped off entirely at top or sides. :)[/centre]

[centre]Image

Choose link in the ''BB CODE'' option as shown at right - and as always manually delete the letter "s" after ''https'' from this string you copy, as you need to do on all images under current software.[/centre]

[centre]***********************************[/centre]

http://www.imageshack.com is also a cinch to use -

[centre]Image[/centre]

[centre]***********************************[/centre]

For the FOR SALE or WANTED Forums (only) IMGUR are dead against their images being hosted there in $$ sales Forum areas, so please host anything there in http://imgbox.com or (less preferred) http://www.imageshack.com etc as both offer a quick 800 pixel image size large option - ideal for here. See quick overview here -

[centre]= = = = = = = = =[/centre]

Below are some instructions below on how to load photos here in our now NOT preferred option IMGUR (as they have tech issues now) now - click on THIS thread to practice your new found posting skills! It is fast and easy to master as you can see, from other member first attempts -

If you have a scanned image on your computer, or you want to post an image from the internet, you can load them to Stampboards, via these free image storage programs. (IMGUR not working right now.)

[centre]= = = = = = = = =[/centre]

To set up a totally free account with IMGUR: Go to - http://www.imgur.com

1. When you log into Imgur use the drop-down menu under your login and click on IMAGES
Image

2. Drop down the Auto-resize menu and select 800 x 600 option so that the image will fit on Stampboards
Image

3. Click on ADD IMAGES
Image

You can upload from a web URL or an image from your own computer

Image

4. If you want to add an image from your own computer you can drag images into the box or browse pictures on your computer- select one or more then upload.
Image

Note - if your image is taking a while to upload drop down IMAGES again/take LEAVE PAGE OPTION/open IMAGES again and your newly downloaded image should appear.

5. Click on your uploaded image/images to select then drop down the View image info box and select Generate image links
Image

6. Click Done and drop down the link options box to ensure you select the correct format of link to cut and paste into the Stampboards post box. You will choose the "BBCODE" link that starts with [img]https://i.imgur.com.......
Image

Do NOT choose and post here the "LINKED BB Code" box link that many do for some reason! Use ONLY the short "BB CODE" links here as shown. There are strong technical reasons for this policy.

Image

7. Cut and paste the coded files into the Stampboards box. ALL DONE!
Image

Sept 2017 NOTE IMGUR have recently tweaked their software - if you use "BBCode link" then you will get a "It was not possible to determine the dimensions of the image" message when you hit the PREVIEW Button here.

TO fix the image just delete the 's' from 'https' in the code and it will post fine.

Image

Hit the "PREVIEW" Button, and that shows you all is correct with your image and your post.

When all looks correct, hit "Submit" and your image will appear in the post.

How to load via an Iphone APP - imgur does have an app - on my iphone - once you click on an image within the app, you get an icon at the bottom for sharing. If you touch the image again (or the 'share' icon), you get an icon that will bring up your phone's sharing menu including an option to "Copy Link". Paste this link with the [img] function to post the image to Stampboards. So it is very easy to upload images to your imgur account from your phone, using the imgur app.

[centre]***********************************[/centre]

Please note - NEVER delete or move to different Albums, any images from your IMGUR or IMGBOX or any other photo storage accounts, that you have ever loaded here, or they will also be deleted from Stampboards - and look like this below!

[centre]Image

Image[/centre]

That is heavily frowned upon, as it obviously disrupts threads, and may lead to a member suspension.

[centre]***********************************[/centre]

Threads like this one are GREAT because of the photos:

http://www.stampboards.com/viewtopic.php?f=17&t=1249&start=350

Various other technical tips are in the Tech forum at:

http://www.stampboards.com/viewforum.php?f=18

***********************************

And if you see an image from another website you want to post here, and know it will be OK with them, simply right click on that image, then left click on the "PROPERTIES" link you see and a box pops up.

Then mouse highlight the "address url' you see there, press CTRL and C buttons together. (This copies that url)

That url will look something like this: http://www.stampboards.com/images/miscr/NlHeuwg.jpg

And it will nearly ALWAYS have the word .jpg (or .gif) at end as this one does.

Then go to the thread you want to paste photo into, click "POST REPLY" icon at lower left, and press the CTRL and V keys together (= paste") and in the reply box.

Simply highlight that with your mouse, and press the "Add Photo" box along top.

And our software then automatically adds little HTML tags like [ img] and [/img]

to either end - so then press "SUBMIT" - and VOILÀ .. you get to load great stamp images here.

You too, can then add great images like these - most members here use [b]Canon LIDE brand scanners
- $100 or so globally, small and compact, and give these superb results readily and easily -

[centre]Image

Yea Glen,

I actually like more photos - you also note that most of the better stuff I got from you was because of photo scans - saves me tons of trouble trying to figure out things and asking questions that can be easily said in a picture - they say a picture is worth a thousand words.

Cheers

Here is advice I gave to "greengo" for his "Leaders Of The World" locomotive thread.

Now, that thread has had endless 1000s of views, and is #1 on global google rating. :)

If you want YOUR posts and YOUR stamp images to reach a global audience via google, a few seconds spent on adding intelligent CAPTIONS to your images helps that enormously.

Remember google "spiders" are not human, and need a short SUMMARY in words under photo, and if they get it, google will "rank" photos and data very high.

i.e. under a photo a line like this will do wonders.

It may SEEM obvious, but typing for each caption the word "Czech Republic stamp", adding always the Year of issue and the face value and title of stamp is ESSENTIAL, and needs be placed under each photo.

Adding the word STAMP and face value to each caption seems pretty silly, but it helps google searches hugely, as the robots cannot "see" it is a 5/- or 50c postage stamp. unless the caption tells them that.

i.e.

[centre]Image
Czech Republic 25kc 2006 stamp "Montenegrin Madonna" painting from 1865 by Jaroslav Cermák (1830-1878) National Art Gallery in Prague.[/centre]

... if that makes sense?

admin wrote:To ALL members on ALL threads please bear this in mind.

Be aware if you use full captions, google picks up EVERY post so others will find your thread!

i.e. if this appears 20 times in a thread google will make this thread number search match -

"Leaders Of The World" Railway stamp issues

If it occurs once, they rank it much lower. So I changed heading from

"My L.o.W. Railway collection"

For the same reasons. Never abbreviate - google does not 'see' it then.

So if you type -

Grenadines of St.Vincent
1984 "Leaders Of The World" Railway stamp issues
2nd set of 8 pairs
values: 1c, 5c, 20c, 35c, 60c, $1, $1.50, $3

and not just this -

Grenadines of St.Vincent
1984
2nd set of 8 pairs
values: 1c, 5c, 20c, 35c, 60c, $1, $1.50, $3

LOTS More people see it.

Admin

And a p.s. - if you ensure the description is placed very close to the scan underneath it, the Google "spider" sees that, and connects the 2 when folks are searching for images.

Manually ADD a space between your caption, and the next photo.

i.e. this is OPTIMUM way to present an image and related text, so that YOUR post gets matched by google with the relevant photo.

Remember google "spiders" cannot read your mind. :)

Posting a photo of the Australia 1932 Green Sydney Harbour Bridge stamp is evident visually to us, but unless the words -

Australia 1932 5/- Green Sydney Harbour Bridge stamp SG 132,

appear as well, google will not index that.

This below is the OPTIMUM way to list captions for best google "spidering"

Image
Grenadines of St.Vincent
1984 "Leaders Of The World" Railway stamp issues
2nd set of 8 pairs
values: 1c, 5c, 20c, 35c, 60c, $1, $1.50, $3

Hi Glen,

Just went to photobuckets like you instructed and did a test of the 50 USA bird and flower set on the favourite stamp forum. It works like a dream and I don't have to switch between websites like what I was doing before this. It is really cool.

Cheers

Glen,

Thanks for the tip - now that's a good idea  !!

Here's my own Penny Black Avatar size (yes it has my initials - doesn't everyone's!) :

Image

Not a brilliant image (the original is better)

Now to upload some decent Papua/New Guinea (these will go into the "Best Stamp Images" thread) 8)

I have the same question as you sandgroper. The uploading and all that is really nice but don't know how to downsize, make sharper, etc. Maybe just need to explore more.

No, as that is not a link to a thread on this webpage, and has nothing to do with the question about the KGV stamp image. :D

Spending 5 minutes of my own time I located what he was talking about:

viewtopic.php?t=229

Had sandgroper actually read the original reply to him on the thread in question that he did not offer here as a link, a minute in Picasa clearly solved the issue as he was advised.

No-one minds offering advice to members I am sure, but when it is given and apparently ignored it does make assistance that much tougher.

The original KGV scan was very crooked, with far too much black on either side.

http://picasa.google.com/download/thanks.html

Picasa is a free google program, and to repeat my original advice, to take THAT to photobucket gives us this:

Sorry for the messup admin.

I went back to Photobucket and found the menu to resize as well as rotate but I guess it does not allow you to shift images just a little but complete 90 degree turns.

Anyway please accept my apologies.

Or I am I overlooking the simple...I envy the many who say 'yay' how good and easy...

QldCds - it must be Ground Hog Day. I am now convinced of it.

What is hard or difficult about the advice just given to doug above .. to cut and paste the link photobucket helpfully gives you .. for goodness sakes they even have added the [img] code links for you in there!!!!!!!!

I guess they could fly over a live person to do those 2 keyboard clicks for you folks ..... there's an idea .... drop them an email.

hey sandgroper

don't give up yet

once you have registered and uploaded the photo you want, just right click on the image and click copy, then get into the stampboard reply site that you want and right click paste.

You can then type a message above or below the image, the same as you can thru MS Word.

Hi Sandgroper .. can I have some scans of the 4ds to check postmarks? What are you looking for in KGV?

In my case re photobucket, I have uploaded an image, it's in my album, copied the IMG, but my software does not allow 'paste'...checking whether my firewall is interfering...

QldCds - will have zero to do with software

Simply highlight the correct link on photobucket, click CTRL and c button at the same time, and to paste that here simply click CTRL and v buttons together. Takes 5 seconds.

This is simply copying and pasting but using keystrokes to do it. Worth writing those codes down, as I find them a huge time saver for dozens of daily uses.

To help out a bit, it is also possible to just link to the URL of the image, like so:
<img src="http://www.photobucket.com/THERESTOFTHELINK.jpeg">

Basically, you use <img src at the beginning of the link, then enclose the actual URL within " " and finish up with a >

Hope that helps!

Thumbnail size ... I noted other posters queried size of the image...learned from them to resize.

Don't collect post-KGV, but thought this one worth keeping...sort of ironic?

The normal size photobucket gives seem to work just fine. Thumbnail is REALLY small as you can see.

I took this from a massive 3 MEG file I made for webmaster to load on my own site, and as you can see the image is about right for these pages.

Highlight the "IMG CODE" details of the image in IMGUR (details turn grey), hold ctrl C then drag & drop into the post . 8)

IMPORTANT ... remember if you post a link from your IMGUR account to this board, and then LATER delete that Image from your account, the link to here will then be DEAD, and show as a dreaded red "X" as per photo above.

I did not realise that when deleting a few images today. So PLEASE do not delete images that you have posted anywhere here! Or the board will be populated with ugly red "X".

This board will stay as a long term stamp archive - please do NOT delete any image that you have at some time posted here.

Thanks Margo but no credit to me. I did not get back to have another try so someone did it for me. Will try again later.

I am trying to get my Magpie stamp up (from IMGUR), not Jabiru as previously mentioned.

Although I succeeded before, it is now coming up with a message about an invalid address. Will try again later, probably tonight.

Cheers

KevinHedley,

Nice avatar, why not show the individual stamps on the stamp image, if you have not yet done so.

Cheers
Andrew

Well done ... persistence pays.
:)
Now you need to add the scans to the applicable forums, with a note about the stamps.

Stamper ...... do you have .... a scanner 8)

You really only need to scan at 300 dpi, that's the resolution on all my scans and it is really good enough.

Love those NZ stamp duty (got a few of them, including the different w/marks)

Thanks Lakatoi

I will alter it down to 300 dpi.

I am now trying your suggestion of Black Hagner in scan.

*sighs* at how long it has taken me to find the cropping facility.
